Why are girls often referred to as young “ladies” and not young women? What is wrong with “women” as a word?

Although boys can sometimes be referred to as “Young Men“, why do some people think it is impolite to refer to girls as “young women” and refer to them as “young ladies” instead?

I’ve heard a group of girls referred to as young women before and I’ve also heard a group of boys refered to as young gentlemen. It’s really just the person speaking’s level of respect for whom they are speaking to.
